Galvanized Steel vs Aluminum: Which Is Better for Your Underdeck?
A practical comparison of the two most common underdeck materials, written for Colorado homeowners who want to know what is actually under their roof for the next 30 years.



The short answer
For Colorado weather, galvanized steel wins on every metric that matters
Both galvanized steel and aluminum can technically work as underdeck panel material. We have installed both. After 22 years of watching how each performs through Colorado winters, UV, snow load, and freeze-thaw cycles, we use galvanized steel exclusively. Here is the honest reasoning.
1. Strength under snow load
Aluminum panels (especially the stamped 0.024″ gauge most underdeck systems use) deform permanently under heavy snow load. Once they buckle, the drainage slope is broken and water starts ponding. Galvanized steel at 24 gauge holds 4× the load with no permanent deformation.
2. UV stability over decades
Aluminum’s protective oxide layer chalks and dulls within 5–7 Colorado seasons. The pre-painted finish on galvanized steel (PVDF or SMP) is rated for 30–40 years of sun exposure with minimal color shift. We have 22-year-old installs that still look like the install date.
3. Freeze-thaw resistance at panel joints
Aluminum has a coefficient of thermal expansion roughly twice that of steel. In Colorado’s daily 40-degree temperature swings, aluminum joints work themselves loose and start leaking. Galvanized steel moves less, so the sealed joints stay sealed.
4. Hail and impact
Colorado’s Front Range is the most hail-prone region in North America. Aluminum dents on impact and the dent is permanent. Galvanized steel either deflects the hail or the dent is far less visible. Insurance companies know this — premiums on aluminum systems run higher.
5. Recyclability and end-of-life
Both materials are recyclable. Steel has a 90%+ post-consumer recycled content rate in North America; aluminum is closer to 75%. Galvanized steel slightly edges out aluminum on the sustainability dimension at end-of-life.
When aluminum makes sense
If you are doing a temporary install, a small balcony with no snow load, or you are operating on a strict short-term budget — aluminum is fine. We will tell you that honestly. But for a permanent residential underdeck in Colorado that you want to outlast your ownership of the home, galvanized steel is the right call every time.
